I’ve watched, on catch up, the second debate between Nigel Farage of UKIP and Nick Clegg of the Liberal Democrats on the subject of the European Union.
The overall impression that I came away with from watching the two men spar on the BBC was that Clegg is an ex-leader, he is bereft of substance and Nick Clegg and any credibility he once had is just so over.
Despite Clegg trying to smear Farage by bringing up his comment that Vladimir Putin had ‘played a good political game’ none of the mud stuck on Farage.
On almost every subject from immigration, through economics and on to energy policy Clegg came over as shifty, dishonest and out of touch with the public mood. Clegg came over as he is, which is a member of the political class that Farage described as practising ‘duplicity and deception’ to ensure Britain’s continuing membership of the European Union. Although the left orientated mainstream media attacks Nigel Farage for his City background he came over much better than Clegg who oozed insincerity and plainly showed that he is part of that venal and dishonest Establishment which has so badly erred with their blind adherence to the EU project along with their many other mistakes.
On the subject of immigration Clegg’s detachment from reality really showed. It was plain to see how Clegg significantly underplayed the problem of immigration and its effects not just on big cities, which are the traditional destination of migrants to Britain, but its negative effect on market and county towns. I got the impression that Nigel Farage’s views were far more in tune with the public mood than Nick Clegg’s.
This debate was a surprisingly easy win for Nigel Farage. Despite there being time for Nick Clegg to research for the debate and despite having the resources with which to do so, Nigel Farage was still able to trip up Clegg on issues of fact and was able to counter Clegg’s assertions. Nigel Farage really came over as being much better briefed on his subject than Nick Clegg was.
On a number of occasions Clegg really looked out of his depth and resorted to smears such as ‘UKIP wants to turn Britain back to the 1950’s’ and because Clegg was losing the argument of fact, started to play the man not the ball.
All in all Clegg looked flustered and very hot under the collar as well as looking shifty and dishonest. What we are seeing in Clegg is an example of a political leader who is damaged beyond repair and whose credibility has been damaged by the actions of both himself and his party. Clegg is finished as a leader, he is so over and we have seen that change from credible leader to shifty has-been in the space of the two hours of televised debate between him and Nigel Farage.
I predict that the number of those who will be considering voting for UKIP will have grown after these two debates and that the number of those who were considering voting for the Lib Dems will fall.
