There is very little that I could say about this week’s movie offering apart from that it is a masterpiece of a movie based on a masterpiece of a book.
This version of Animal Farm, based on the novel of the same name by George Orwell, was made in 1954 and this animated version of the tale is the one that sticks in my mind the most. Animation can easily be dismissed as ‘only for children’ but this movie shows that animation can tell a story that can inform, inspire and educate people of all ages.
Animal Farm tells the story of a revolution that goes badly wrong, as many revolutions often do. A farm, run by a human farmer who mistreats his animals so badly that they revolt against the farmer and start to run the farm themselves. However, like the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, the oppressed who rise to power end up becoming oppressors in their turn and this is what happens to the animals of Animal Farm.
I hope you enjoy this film as much as I have done.
Frightening parallels with the politics of today.
An excellent and prophetic harbinger of things to come, like 1984.
Orwell was years ahead of his time.
