Friday Night Movie number 63 – The Stranger

Tonight’s Friday Night Movie is a good old fashioned thriller called The Stranger made in 1948 and starring Edward G Robinson as Mr Wilson, an investigator tasked by the Nuremburg War Crimes Tribunals to find a missing Nazi war criminal who has apparently disappeared off of the face of the Earth.

The criminal, Kindler is wanted for being one of the architects of the Holocaust, cannot be found by normal investigative means so Wilson releases one of his associates from custody in the hope that he will lead him to Kindler. Wilson learns that the associate of Kindler is on his way to the United States and follows him in the hope of apprehending Kindler.

Kindler has taken great care that he will not be associated with he crimes and has managed to avoid having his picture taken and has changed his name and his appearance. The only clue that Wilson has to go on is the knowledge that Kindler has a complete obsession with clocks.

Wilson makes his way to Harper in Connecticut where Meinike, Kindler’s associate has gone. However by the time Wilson gets there Meinike is dead and Wilson is faced with an even more challenging task in finding Kindler.

This is an excellent film that I’ve seen on several occasions and enjoy the plot even though I know the outcome, especially the clock related final scenes which are very well done.

I enjoyed this film very much. I enjoyed the acting, especially Edward G Robinson’s jovial steelyness and the plot which holds the attention from beginning to end. I hope that you enjoy it too.
