I’m indebted to the Tweeter Amy Mek, (who can be found on Twitter as @AmyMek ) who has publicised this wonderful bit of news from Detroit, Michigan USA. It seems that there has been a victory by the local people against a mosque that Muslims in the suburb of Sterling Heights wanted to impose on the area. Plans for this large and imposing mosque were thrown out by the local council to the delight of local non-Muslims.

Hundreds of people seemed to be cheering the defeat of the mosque imposition and the delight on the faces of those who opposed the mosque and the dejected faces of the Muslim mosque-e-teers who had tried to force this mosque on the town tell the whole story. It’s wonderful for the local non Muslims to have defeated this plan and the mosque opponents were quite rightly worried about the sort of disruption that this mosque would have brought.

Here’s a video from a local TV station in Michigan showing the refusal of the mosque, along with the delight it gave to local non Muslims, who quite rightly don’t want their area turned into an Islamic hell hole.

However, if I were among those who are celebrating the defeat of this mosque imposition then I would advise them to still be on their guard. It’s highly likely, if the US situation is anything like the one here in the United Kingdom, that these mosque-e-teers will have another go at imposing the mosque. They may make cosmetic or minor changes to the plans in order to have another go at imposing a mosque or embark on a pro-mosque PR campaign to try to win over those citizens who may be wavering. Therefore if I was a local I would not give up fighting this mosque imposition as it’s likely that the Muslims will not give up. Despite that warning this should be seen as a victory for local non Muslims against an unwanted mosque imposed on their town.
