After a very tough battle, Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed by the United States Senate as a Justice of America’s Supreme Court. Mr Kavanaugh, who has been described in some sources sympathetic to him as a ‘constitutional originalist’ and by opponents as ‘extreme right wing’ was put through the wringer by the American Left during his confirmation hearings in front of America’s legislature.
Mr Kavanaugh was subjected to some of the most awful abuse and wildly outrageous and patently false accusations of sexual misconduct by the Left including America’s current opposition party the Democrats. It was both fascinating and horrifying to watch the lengths that the Left would go to to try to prevent Mr Kavanaugh taking up a recently vacated position on America’s Supreme Court. The Left produced completely incredible allegations from even less credible complainants to make claims about alleged abuse committed by Mr Kavanaugh when he was a college student. Despite all the resources of the US Government, the leftist activists and the increasingly discredited left leaning US media, very little dirt was found on Mr Kavanaugh and nothing that could credibly be described as in any way criminal.
This appointment is a triumph for President Trump and an utter disaster for America’s Left. It is a Trump win as he has now got two Supreme Court choices confirmed and this is going to influence American jurisprudence long after President Trump has gone as Supreme Court Justices serve for life or until the Justice chooses to step down. This is a disaster for the Left as their preference would be for activist judges who may be sympathetic to Leftist ideas and concepts and whose decisions may be influenced by these concepts even though Congress or the Presidency may be held by Republicans. The court currently contains four Justices who were appointed by Democrat Presidents, Bill Clinton, two, and Barack Obama, two. There are also two who were appointed by George HW Bush, one by George W Bush and now two appointed by President Trump. There is now a majority of Justices appointed by Republicans in the Supreme Court and this is making the Left worried.
From now on the Left may find it more difficult to get their way in the court or get judgements that are in line with Leftist ideas and we could be looking at a Court that errs more towards the rights of individuals rather than Leftist preference which is rights for groups or for collectives. However, time will tell on this and there’s now guarantee that a Justice appointed by a President will follow that President’s ‘party line’. It now seems to me, at least from my overseas observation post, that there is now much more of a middle ground feeling when it comes to judicial and political thought on the court and this may make for some interesting as well as controversial judicial decisions in the future.
Watching Brett, now Justice Kavanaugh, face a grilling by Democrat senators and other lawmakers over issues relating to his behaviour as a student, which included unfounded allegations of sexual assault, showed that the American Left is not interested in truth, only in acquiring and holding onto power. This was a nakedly political process with most of the political activism, or at least the most public and nasty parts of it, coming from the Left. The Democrats put an obviously non-credible complainant up to smear Justice Kavanaugh and kept up the pressure even when the complainant’s claims had been comprehensively rubbished. This process exposed the Left, their bad behaviour and their lack of ethics to not just America but the entire world. The Left smeared Justice Kavanaugh and tried to destroy him without good reason merely because he appears to them like a roadblock on the Democrat’s route to power over the lives of Americans. The matter of Justice Kavanaugh’s appointment could have been done more calmly and without the sort of sharp practise and hyperbole over such matters as Roe v Wade as the Left, including the mainstream Democrat Party, have engaged in.
The Left really dropped the ball with this one, not only have they failed to block the second of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominations, they have also exposed themselves as the true ‘nasty party’ who will stop at nothing, not even outright lies, in order to gain and keep political, social and judicial influence. I would be completely unsurprised if the behaviour of senior Democrats over this matter ends up causing future problems for the party. I can well see for example, ordinary decent Democrat voters and supporters, becoming turned off by this display of dishonesty and nakedly partisan tactics that have come from both Democrat politicians and the wider more fraggly Left, which the Democrat Party seems unwilling to disassociate with.
Maybe the result of this confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh will not only affect the constitution of the Supreme Court but may also turn the trickle of ordinary Democrats who are ‘walking away’ from the Party into a massive haemorrhage? It is quite possible that this appointment and the furore surrounding it may be the moment that future historians could point out when the jig was up for the far Leftists who have taken over the Democrats and the point when the Democrats either became a sensible party or became a footnote in American political history? We do not know of course but what is certain is that Justice Kavanaugh has earned his seat on the Supreme Court not just by dint of his prior judicial experience, but also by the way he has had to suffer the slings and arrows of lies and smears by Leftist politicians desperate to hold onto power and influence over American politics, administration, the judiciary and ultimately power over ordinary American citizens
