The correct way to describe someone who, whilst carrying a Koran and shouting ‘Allah hu Akbar’, trespasses into a church bakery, smacks one of the bakers over the head with an iron bar, then stabs one of the Christians who came to the baker’s aid, is not ‘mentally ill’, it is Muslim. Normal mentally ill people are often not prey to doing things like this and carrying the symbols and uttering the words that are closely associated with a death cult, this is a Muslim trait not a general trait of the mentally ill.
This appalling incident where a Muslim attacked Christians occurred in Egypt where the Christian minority has for centuries been under threat and still is under threat from Islam and Muslims. According to a report in the UK Daily Express, that was in turn based on information supplied by Christian human rights organisations, a group of Christians praying peacefully at the Church of St George in the Egyptian capital Cairo by a Muslim shouting ‘Allah hu Akbar’. The Christian group, in a country where Christians are under great threat of violence from Muslims, are complaining that the authorities are classing this incident as one motivated by the attacker’s mental illness issues. The Christian NGO accused the Egyptian government of trying to hide the extent of the Jihad that the country’s Christians have been suffering from by classifying this attack as rooted in mental illness rather than Jihad.
I must admit I would not be surprised to see the Egyptian government try to pull the ‘mental illness’ excuse, the government there is in a tricky situation. The Egyptian government needs to promote the country as safe, partly in order to try to rebuild the country’s tourist industry, which has suffered greatly from the effects of the actions of Islamic extremists. Unfortunately there are also a lot of radicalised Muslims among Egypt’s population, and they just want to kill and maim for Allah. Therefore the Egyptian government, rather than admitting that Egypt has a jihad problem, may pass attacks like this off as ‘mental illness.
However, no matter how the Egyptian government may desperately try to spin this attack, the motivation for it, even if ‘mental illness’ plays a minor part in it, is plainly rooted in Islam. This bastard did not attack a random person due to some out of control delusion that they are their enemy or anything like that. He did not go mad in a mosque or a market or in his home. He attacked a church full of Christians whilst shouting ‘Allah hu Akbar’ and carrying a Koran. This is not mental illness, this is Islam.
