The world of ex Muslims is an extremely intellectually diverse one. You have ex Muslims who vehemently turn against Islam and are very vocal in saying so especially those who have changed to another faith. Some ex Muslims have joined up with those who are extremely anti religion per se and can be as authoritarian and intolerant of religion as a whole as extremist Muslims are intolerant of other faiths. You also have ex Muslims who take an intellectual deconstructionist approach to Islam, such as Apostate Prophet for example. Then there are others who try to take what’s best about Islamic culture and use them as building blocks to build both themselves up and to do what they can to make society better for everyone.
Anyone who explores the world of the ex-Muslim or starts to explore this world will find out that this world is as infinitely as variable as human beings are themselves. I have discovered that sometimes I agree with these ex Muslims and sometimes I do not, but they always provide me with an insight into Islam and Islamic culture that is as unique as each individual and their story.
I’ve discovered another ex Muslim that I believe is worth listening to and that is Mimsy of the You Tube channel ‘Mimsy Vids’. This intelligent, engaging and apparently very caring lady is very knowledgable about Islam and Islamic culture, both its negative and positive sides. She does not appear to have chosen another religion instead of Islam but neither is she an intolerant authoritarian shrieker opposed to all faiths, which some who leave Islam or other religions can be. Her output is varied in subject and not just about Islam and is also very nuanced. This ability to look at an issue in a nuanced way is demonstrated very clearly in her video on the subject of grooming gangs. In that video she looks critically at Islamic attitudes to women and the basis for these attitudes and how this background along with a hyper separatist attitude expressed by some British Muslims has contributed to this scandal.
