It’s another British WWII movie for you tonight but this is primarily because I love old British WWII movies. In fact I love these movies so much and watch them so often that Mrs Fahrenheit has remarked to me: ‘It’s always September 3rd 1939 in our house isn’t it?’
Tonight’s offering is ‘They Were Not Divided’ which was made in 1950 and tells the story of a group of men, from diverse backgrounds, including an American, who join the Welsh Guards. The movie follows the men through their induction, training and deployment in France after D Day. It deals with a number of themes such as fear, loss, relationships and a camaraderie forged in the heat of battle.
We also see this group of men go from raw recruits to being heroes and being welcomed as liberators by the French but also encountering such overwhelming crowds of French well wishers that it impedes their progress towards Brussels and then on to Arnhem. This film is excellent. It tells of ordinary people doing extraordinary things and how even the most lowly of soldiers did their bit to rid Europe of a vicious tyranny.
This is a film that I haven’t seen for a few years and I was delighted to find it available. I hope you enjoy this film as well.
