For a religion that is claimed, unjustly I might add, to be a ‘religion of peace’, there certainly seem to be a lot of Muslims who hate each other for religious reasons with a violent passion. The biggest conflict comes between Sunni and Shia Muslims but there is also conflict between other groups of Muslims that are accused of being either the wrong sort of Muslim or of not being ‘Muslim enough’. The relatively peaceable Ahmadiyya for instance are often targetted for violence and hatred for religious reasons by the more numerous Sunni Muslims.
Australia has recently seen the conclusion of a court case in which a group of Sunni Muslims committed an act of arson against a Shia mosque. According to a report by Channel 9 News (h/t ROP), three Muslim men have been found guilty of committing a terrorist act against a Shia mosque.
The incident, that happened in 2016 at a Shia mosque in Melbourne, saw two attempts to burn down the Shia’s building one in November 2016 and another in the December of that year. The men were found guilty of the offences after the prosecution claimed that the incidents were designed to intimidate Shia Muslims.
There were chaotic scenes in the courtroom when the Supreme Court verdicts were announced by the Jury with the three Muslims on trial and members of the public in the gallery shouting ‘you dogs’ at the jury members. The court was cleared by the judge and the convicted Islamic terrorists await sentencing. Let’s hope that they serve a long time in prison because it’s plain that these violent savages are extremely dangerous.
It is sadly unsurprising that the followers of a very violent ideology settle their religious disputes by violent means. This I’m afraid is pretty normal for Islam and the vast majority of those killed by Islamic terror in the world today tend to be other Muslims. Yes, Islam really is not a ‘religion of peace’ and cases like this illustrate this very clearly.
