The appalling and biased Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow has finally gone and been replaced with someone who promises to be far better at managing the Commons than Bercow ever did. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, a former Deputy Speaker, has been elected by MP’s to be the new Speaker after four rounds of voting in which the other candidates were successively whittled down.
Former Labour MP Sir Lindsay has promised to be impartial and we await evidence of that via his actions whilst occupying the Speaker’s Chair. But, from what I’ve seen of Sir Lindsay in action when he has been acting as Deputy Speaker, he does have the capacity to do that. In any event it would be hard to be more biased than his predecessor.
Speaker Bercow presided over a period when the Speaker openly courted and favoured those MP’s who want to Remain in they European Union and defy the wishes of the people to leave following the 2016 Referendum. Bercow tarnished the image of Parliament not just among Britons but across the world with his favouring of Remainers and their plots and his abuse of the machinery of Parliament in order to boost Remain causes.
I hope that Sir Lindsay is much more open minded than Bercow ever was and can bring back some form of respect for the Chamber. This should especially be the case after the General Election when it is to be hoped that many of the Remainer MP’s who fought tooth and nail to annul the Brexit vote, lose their seats.
The choice of Speaker could have been a lot worse than Sir Lindsay. Harriet Harman, who would likely as not be a carbon copy of Bercow in the role of Speaker. This would have been a terrible choice for Speaker and I’m delighted that she was rejected in the earlier rounds of voting for the Speaker.
The Bercow era has gone and Britons should rejoice in that fact. Let’s hope that after the election Sir Lindsay can bring some sanity and honesty to the House, qualities that have been missing during a large part of Bercow’s
