Many of us started 2019 hoping that there would be a fall in the number of murders in London compared to the 132 that occurred in 2018. Unfortuately for both the victims and their families and for ordinary Londoners, a drop in murders has not occurred. The death last night of two more people from homicide takes the total of deaths up to 135.
Whilst this is lower than it was earlier in the century, it is much higher than it should be bearing in mind that crime reduction was a major part of Greater London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s election promises. Khan has failed to honour this promise as he’s failed to honour many others.
Ironically, because Khan is a vocal anti-racist, many of those killed have been from London’s Black community and too often the deaths are for trivial reasons like being in an area controlled by a gang from that postcode. Khan has presided over a situation where Black Londoners have come to wonder whether or not their kids will end the day dead or alive when they go out in the morning.
Khan has been a disaster for London. He had failed to deal with the problem of street gangs or knives or the shockingly high number of murders. Instead of funding vital projects to enhance community policing or divert young people from violence, he has spunked £1.7M of taxpayers money on a ‘hate crime hub’ vanity project that mostly concentrated on people saying hurty words on the internet.
The only good thing about Khan’s leadership of London is that there is the opportunity to vote this bastard out of office on the 7th May 2020. London Labour parties have nominated Khan for another term but unless he’s stopped, it’s liable that London may become even more dangerous than it is already.
