The current Chinese Covid19 emergency has brought out in some people both the best in personal conduct and some behavior that is utterly dispicable. Lots of people, especially in the more rural areas have decided to take a ‘WWII attitude’ and do their best to do their bit and deliver food to the needy, check on the vulnerable and generally help their neighbour. This behavior is to be both supported and applauded.

However there are other people, some wearing police uniforms and some who do not, for whom this current emergency is an excuse to indulge their own authoritarian wank fantasies and to give their closet fascist tendencies a bit on airing. As well as being policed in a manner for which the word ‘overzealous’ is really not strong enough, we are also finding out that there are an awful lot of petty informers and authoritarians who are enjoying their temporary day in the sun. There behavior is so bad and they have proven themselves to be so untrustworthy that their conduct should be remembered by the rest of us when this emergency is over. We now know which of our fellow subjects are those who we can not trust and who should later on be shunned and criticised for their behavior .

I will be writing more about the issue of the nasty Stasi style grassing culture that has arisen in Britain at some point in the futgure but for the moment the best comment I’ve seen on this phenomenon for a while is from Longrider.

Longrider excoriates those authoritarians who want to see people shot for disrespecting the NHS or the monarch and those police officers who presume that they have the moral and legal authority to rummage around in shopping bags. Longrider’s post reflects my own anger at what is going on and that anger is increased by the knowledge that the force that covers my own area, which is stopping people and harassing them for being out of the house without a reason that satisfies the police, is the same force that ignored Pakistani and Muslim rape gangs in Telford for at least a decade.
