When the statue of Edward Colston, a Bristolian philanthropist who had made some of his money in the Transatlantic Slave Trade was toppled and thrown into Bristol Harbour by a violent mob of BLM/Marxist activists, the initial response of a senior police officer, disgusted many ordinary decent Britons who saw it. The statement by Superintendent Andy Bennet of Avon and Somerset Police in which Supt Bennet said that he ‘understood’ why the statue was toppled gave the distinct impression that the local police force supported the BLM/Marxist thuggery on that day. Supt Bennet’s statement, which can be found on video here, was not one that we should expect to come from an officer who has pledged on oath to uphold the law without fear or favour. It was plainly a biased and very political statement.
However, pressure from the public about Avon and Somerset’s obvious politically correct policing along with pressure from both a Tory candidate for the position of local police and crime commissioner and from the Home Secretary Pritti Patel, seems to be having some effect on Avon and Somerset’s policing priorities. The Avon and Somerset force seems to have done a swift about turn on the subject of the vandals who toppled the Colston statue quite possibly because of the public and political outcry over the force’s politicised policing of the incident.
Avon and Somerset Police are now appealing for information about the vandals and thugs who toppled the statue and have put this appeal up on their website. They have also issued images of the alleged vandals in an attempt to catch and prosecute them.
Avon and Somerset Police said:
We’re appealing for the public’s help to identify a number of people we’d like to speak to as part of our investigation into the criminal damage caused to the statue of Edward Colston.
The statue was pulled from its plinth and rolled into Bristol harbour at around 2.30pm on Sunday, 7 June during a Black Lives Matter demonstration.
Detective Superintendent Liz Hughes said: “The incident attracted worldwide attention and there’s no denying it has polarised public opinion – but in the eyes of the law a crime has been committed and we’re duty-bound to investigate this without fear or favour.
“I’d like to reassure people we’re carrying out a thorough, fair and proportionate investigation and have sought early investigative advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Whilst it is good to see that Avon and Somerset Police are finally getting off of their arses and making some attempt to bring to justice these vandals and thugs, I am still left with two questions that need answering. The first question is this: Would Avon and Somerset have gone after the BLM/Marxist thugs without pressure from both the public and from the political classes? The second question is why is Superintendent Bennet still employed in the senior position he is in by Avon and Somerset Police despite showing obvious political bias in the execution of his duties?
