Pakistan is a sick and twisted society. It is that way because it is a society that is based on some of the worst forms of Islam on the planet. It is a shithole of monstrous proportions primarily because it is a society with its roots in Islam, unlike its neighbour India which is a broadly secular state although one with a Hindu religious character. Pakistan is a religious state based on some of the strictest interpretations of Islam and because of that it is an increasingly unsafe place for those who want to think or speak freely.

Pakistan is even dangerous for those who want such a basic thing as religious tolerance and in particular tolerance for religious minorities. According to a report by the ANI news agency (h/t Religion of Peace) a former Pakistan foreign minister is being accused of blasphemy for saying ‘all religions are equal’.

Pakistan’s former minister of Foreign Affairs and stalwart of the PML party, Khawaja Asif, is facing blasphemy charges for speaking against religious inequality in the country.

A blasphemy complaint has been filed against Khawaja by ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf president Zafarwal Tehsil, Qamar Riaz Sulehri for saying that ‘all religions are equal’ in the light of the constitution.

So there you have it. All it takes to be accused of blasphemy, a crime that can be punished with the death penalty, in Pakistan is the relatively mild comment that all religions are equal, a comment that would pass by without much remark in more civilised nations. Truly Pakistan is the turd that refuses to flush.
