I’m not a fan of American football, to me it’s just Rugby but with extra body armour. However it is or rather was, very popular in the United States. I say ‘was’ here because there seem to be an increasing number of Americans who are displeased with the injection of leftism into their national sport.
According to reports in the US press, the revival of American Football following the shutdown due to the coronavirus panic has been the first opportunity for fans of the sport to attend games for quite a while. Prior to that, the American people have been subjected to all manner of leftist and Black Lives Matter guff being spouted at them by very wealthy sportsmen and also utterly specious accusations of ‘white privilege’ and ‘racism’ coming from those whose talent is on the sports field and not in politics.
Now, at last, fans are being allowed into games and these fans have had an opportunity to express their feelings to those who play and manage American Football about all the politicisation that has been going on whilst the season was shut down. But what the fans are expressing is the polar opposite of what the wealthy race baiters from within the structure of American Football wanted to hear.
A bit of cringe-worthy ‘moment of unity’ virtue signalling by the Kansas City Chiefs was booed by the crowd attending a game between them and the Houston Texans. Also because the Houston Texans refused to come out on the field during the national anthem, they were also booed by the crowd when they eventually bothered to come out of their dressing room.
I’m really not surprised about this protest by fans. You can’t abuse and denigrate your fans no matter what sport you play, but to abuse the fans as much as the wealthy US football players have done is inviting some backlash or pushback.
All sports, especially expensive ones with lots of staff and necessary expenditure depend for their existence on the fans footing the bill at the end of the day. For players in any sport to treat fans like dirt and unjustly accuse them of things like ‘racism’ is going to drive away those fans.
Because of the stupidity of the NFL in the USA climbing aboard the Black Lives Matter bandwagon, a wagon driven it needs to be said by Marxists, the NFL has shot itself in the foot big time. It is apparently losing fans at a high rate of knots and although I don’t believe it will crash and burn, the backlash by fans is going to hurt the NFL and put it on short financial rations for the foreseeable future.
In my view the fans have done the correct thing. They’ve expressed their view about football players mouthing off about what they know little about and mouthing off about a cause that is in part responsible for some American cities being turned into something akin to war zones. The NFL is reaping a whirlwind of disapproval and one they could have avoided had they nipped this BLM knobwittery by players in the bud when the phenomenon of disrespectfully kneeling for the national anthem started a few years back. The NFL are in a hole of their own making and if they are to get out of it then they need to concentrate on the sport and the fans and not on left wing politics.
As for other nations that have been afflicted by the cancer of Black Lives Matter support among players and sports administrators, maybe it’s time for similar actions elsewhere. Maybe the fans of these sports, most notably Formula One, soccer and cricket, that have also been adversely affected by BLM/Marxist infiltration, to consider expressing their displeasure at what has gone on in a similar way? These sports need our money and I fail to see why people should give money to sports where the participants unjustly smear fans as ‘racist’.
I have stopped watching all of these “woke” sports. Not one penny of my money or a minute of my time wasted on this frankly RACIST, INSULTING, tactics. If like to think that hundreds of thousands of us will do likewise.
