The increasingly unhinged and authoritarian Health Secretary Matt Hancock seems to want Britons to live in some form of East German style society, one where citizens inform on others and where no Briton can be sure who has informed on them. All this for the fools errand of trying to suppress a virus that a) cannot reasonably be suppressed and b) one that has already, as nearly all epidemics do, burned through those who are most at risk of harm from it. Personally I don’t want to live in such a grassing society and will do my damned utmost to not cooperate with those who do want this or who themselves grass.

To this end I’ve taken the Liberty Pledge to never, ever grass up anyone for breaching the every more lunatic and dangerous covid restrictions and to ostracise those who do become informers. One poster on Guido Fawkes has raised a very salient point. This is that the whole ‘grassing society’ idea from Hancock breaches the convention that in general those who make accusations must be identified and give their evidence in open court. Society and especially the legal system would never accept anonymous accusations of wrong doing in any other area, so it should be equally unpalatable and unacceptable to accept anonymous accusations regarding covid.

I wonder how many snitchers would be prepared to snitch if they had to give their names and addresses to the police so that they could tell the offenders who had reported them. It is a tenet of English law that the accused is entitled to know who his accusers are; that is why, except in very rare cases such as those involving national security, witnesses to crimes cannot conceal their identity when giving evidence.

I find it quite horrifying that a minister of the crown is actually encouraging such behaviour which is potentially destructive to social harmony and cohesion which is already threatened by disruptive influences like BLM, paving the way for a country riddled with distrust and paranoia.
