I’ve just watched a recording of the US Vice Presidential debate and it was a stonker of a debate. It wasn’t dramatic fireworks but it was still gripping. Even though I am a Trump supporter (although not an American citizen therefore I have no vote in this election) I have tried to watch the debate with as much impartiality as I can muster.
What came over most strongly to me was the difference in the approach to the debate by the two candidates for Vice President. Mike Pence came over as a man in command of facts. He was not evasively defensive to anything like the level that might have damaged his campaign and that of the President, but he did calmly and carefully place before the audience the facts. Whether it was on the subject of covid, the US economy, the US Supreme Court, law and order or any of the other subjects, Mr Pence was the quiet, factual and confident man.
Kamala Harris on the other hand was the complete opposite. She was smarmy, evasive, deployed a lot of superficial and possibly false charm but above all she was emotive. Rather than fire off facts to counter Mr Pence’s arguments she appealed to emotions rather than logic. Whether it be about the questions about her prior positions in government or law and order or the economy, Ms Harris used emotion and emotive arguments and statements in place of facts.
Where Kamala Harris was evasive about her personal views, whether they were controversial or not. Mr Pence did nothing of the sort. He freely admitted that he was a pro-life individual and stood his ground.
I consider this debate to be a win for Mr Pence with Ms Harris coming a distant second. If I was in the position of having to decide who would be best placed to run my country should the President be incapacitated, then I’d plump for Mr Pence, even though there are without doubt some areas on which he and me would disagree. Mr Pence passed the ‘safe pair of hands’ test with flying colours, something that I cannot say of Ms Harris.
