Today’s quote of the day comes from the blogger Squander Two. In his excellent piece on what looks like massive levels of suspected fraud in the US Presidential elections Squander Two examines exactly what it is about the way these elections were managed that should at least cause investigations to be instigated. I would strongly advise that people read the whole of this very interesting and informative post which can be found at their site linked below.

In their piece Squander Two highlights why elections should not only be honest but to also be seen and accepted as honest. Voting and election integrity is important as the alternative, that of civil conflict to settle political differences is so damn awful. The piece I would like to quote from Squander Two’s piece is this:
Democracy works because enough people believe that they will get their way some of the time. Because of that, they are willing to accept the result when they don’t get their way — they know their time will come soon enough. It is this general belief spread throughout the populace that has effectively stopped people resorting to violence. This is why not only actual propriety but the appearance of propriety in the electoral process matters so much. This is why it is vital that suspicious events be investigated seriously. This is why investigating events and finding them to be above board is not the same as pre-emptively declaring that they are not worth investigating in the first place. The process matters far more than the result, because the process is the alternative to what our ancestors did. Our ancestors killed each other. In huge numbers. The best estimate of the effect of the English Civil War on Ireland is that about 41% of the population were killed. No, that’s not a typo. Over disagreement about who should be in charge of another country.
Personally, I prefer voting.
Squander Two’s comment here is spot on. Voting may not be the way that those frustrated by the current system whether on the Left or the Right want to choose in order to bring about change, but it is better than what could take its place. Like many others I’m disgusted by the government that we currently have in the UK and believe that there needs to be some accounting by those in it for the damage that they have done and continue to do to Britain, its economy and its culture. However the way to change that is through voting and I believe voting for alternative parties who will put Britons and our liberties first and not last which is what Labour and the Conservatives do. I don’t want to see US style electoral cheating imported into the UK but there is, as Squander Two says, a chance that it will, because cheating works. Once you take the integrity out of the electoral system then you remove or reduce the ability to accomplish peaceful change and as John F Kennedy once said ‘those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable’. I’ve no wish to see violent revolution, I’ve no wish to see Briton taking up arms against Briton, I want to see ordinary Britons having their justifiable concerns addressed by a Parliament that is on the people’s side. This is something that can only be morally and practically achieved by an honest vote, counted by honest tellers, which is the result of election campaigns in which all parties big and small are allowed effective voices to put their views over to the electorate. Anything else just invites disaster.
