The Britons living today owe somewhat of a debt of gratitude to the hundreds of Polish airforce members who whilst stationed in the UK during World War II, fought like demons against the Nazi menace that we were being threatened by. Whilst it is right and proper that Britons remember ‘the Few’, those Britons who fought in the skies over Southern England during the Battle of Britain, it is also right and proper that Britons acknowledge the contribution, the massive contribution made by the free Polish fighters who made up RAF 303 Squadron.

The contribution by these Polish airmen to the success of the Battle of Britain was immense, so much so that Sir Hugh Dowding, the wartime Air Chief Marshall and head of Fighter Command said of them: “Had it not been for the magnificent material contributed by the Polish squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry,I hesitate to say that the outcome of the Battle (of Britain) would have been the same.”

Britain could have been lost had it not been for these brave and hard fighting Poles. If the Battle of Britain had failed to turn back the Luftwaffe then Hitler’s Operation Sealion, his plan to invade Britain from across the English Channel, might have succeeded. But the RAF, ably assisted by the brave Poles, fought off the Germans and caused them to put off, indefinitely, their plan to invade. Without the hard fighting of these Poles there would have been no resistance to Nazi Germany, no D Day landings, no turfing the Germans out of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, no fall of Mussolini and no suicide of a failed Hitler in his Berlin bunker. In a way I would not be writing this and my wife and son would not be alive today were it not for the contribution that the Polish airmen made to the RAF. I salute the ‘Fighting Polish’.

The reason for me writing this is because yesterday I saw a magnificent tribute to the Poles of RAF 303 Squadron by a firm of Polish origin plumbers based in London. This company has painted their vans in WWII aircraft of 303 Squadron and the livery looks absolutely fabulous. It really did bring a tear to my eye. I was alerted to it via the Tweet below and went in search of the images of the vans so that I could include them here.
