Weekend Movie Number Three – A bit of gentle comedy.

A bit of a change of pace from last week’s Weekend Movie offering which was the psychological noir thriller Cast a Dark Shadow and a move into a bit of comedy from the late 1940’s. Vote For Huggett was the final movie in a series about the Huggett family starring Jack Warner who later found fame as police officer Dixon of Dock Green, along with Petula Clark, Diana Dors, Susan Shaw and Anthony Newley.

The plot revolves around a fight between a solicitors firm, a councillor who stands to benefit from the development of a piece of vacant land and the Huggett family. The piece of land, which was owned by the Huggett family who inherited it from Mrs Huggett’s grandfather is keenly sought after but Joe Huggett wants the land to be used for an open air swimming pool and a park whereas the council want it used as a community centre.

Mr Huggett finds himself embroiled in the fight for the land and is pushed forward into the public eye after a letter he wrote to the local paper ends up propelling him into local politics, much to the initial chagrin of Mrs Huggett.

This is a wonderful period comedy which not only highlights the fight by the little man to make use of the democratic process to benefit his community but also pokes fun at the obviously corrupt and scheming councillors and their supporters and associates.
