Twitter seems to be extremely ban happy at the moment and although much of the focus is on Twitter’s removal of conservatives and others on the Right it also seems to be the case that Twitter is also targeting ex-Muslims. Following on from yesterday’s story on here about the Twitter suspension of the Ex Muslims of North America group, comes the news that Apostate Prophet, a very popular ex-Muslim personality has also been suspended from Twitter.
It appears that Apostate Prophet was banned by Twitter for ripping up a copy of a Koran. Now of course such an action goes against what some believing Muslims might like and causes offence to them, but being ‘offended’ should not be grounds for censorship. I’m offended by stuff I see every day but I do not call for those who’ve offended me to be censored, instead I will either ignore or challenge those who cause me offence.
People should be free to join, leave, criticise or start up their own religions if they wish. This is a basic tenet of the concept of religious freedom. People should be able to follow the peaceful religious path of their choice and engage in criticism or even mockery of those faiths that they either do not agree with or which they have abandoned.
Below is a screenshot from Apostate Prophet about his Twitter ban.
The reason why Apostate Prophet ripped up the Koran was not out of sheer malice but because he has had a plethora of death threats coming to him over social media, including Twitter it seems. But despite constant reports to the management of these platforms, none of the platforms have done anything about those who have threatened death to Apostate Prophet. There is a massive double standard here. It’s one where extremist Muslims can threaten death to someone who has abandoned Islam with virtual impunity, yet when Apostate Prophet hits back with a symbolic denunciation of the ideology that drives these extremists, he’s the one that ends up being banned. Hypocrisy thy name is the liberal Left and it is the liberal Left that control Twitter’s ‘trust and safety council’.
