Whilst it needs to be said that any large organisation could reasonably be said to have in its employ the occasional wrong’un, the record of the Metropolitan Police recently seems to show that there might be more than a minimal number of wrong’uns or alleged wrong’uns working for them.
Following on from the gaoling of Wayne Couzens for the rape and murder of Sarah Everard earlier this year, an offence in which Couzens used his warrant card to persuade Ms Everard to go with him, other allegations of misconduct and crime by Met officers have emerged. So far this year, in addition to the scandal arising out of the crimes of Couzens, an officer who was known to colleagues by the nickname of ‘the rapist’, there has also been a complete failure by officers to properly investigate a missing persons case that turned into a double murder and another officer, who served in the same unit as Couzens, being charged with rape. All this is on top of the other scandals that the Met has been involved in such as failing to police demonstrations equitably, an obsession with political correctness and their failure to get on top of the epidemic of knife crime that afflicts the capital.
Now there is more scandal for the Met and more embarrassment for the Met’s embattled and none too popular leader Dame Cressida Dick. This is another officer charged with rape.
According to a report in the Guardian, serving Met officer, PC Adam Zaman, 28, has been charged with rape related to an incident that occurred in a hotel in the City of London police area last weekend.
The Guardian said:
A serving Metropolitan police officer has been charged with rape, which allegedly took place last weekend at a hotel in the City of London.
The Met named the officer as PC Adam Zaman, 28, and said the alleged rape of a woman took place on Sunday evening while Zaman was off duty. He was arrested the following day after a complaint to police.
The Met said the alleged attack took place in the part of London covered by the City of London force. Zaman, who is from Romford in east London, denies the allegation.
The Met said the officer had been remanded in custody until his next appearance at the Old Bailey on 24 November.
Zaman has been suspended from duty and the police watchdog has been informed.
Whilst it should go without saying that Zaman should be considered as innocent until proven guilty, it also needs to be said that this is yet another embarrassment for a force that is quite frankly mired in scandal, corruption and incompetence.
Yet another nail in the coffin! This is all the police need at a time when public trust in them is at such a low level. This time its the Met again but I guess every other force is infected with these people and at the moment are better at keeping it out of sight.
