It’s a famous docu-drama for you all this week in the form of the movie ‘The First Of The Few’ which is about the life of Reginald Joseph Mitchell the aviation designer who came up with the concept of the Supermarine Spitfire. Although it was the Hurricane aircraft that had more success in beating German aircraft, the records show that the Spitfire had a lower attrition rate than other aircraft and ended up becoming one of the iconic aircraft (along with the Lancaster) of the Second World War.
RJ Mitchell died of cancer in 1937 and never got to see his aircraft in action against the Nazis but he did at least get to know that the Air Ministry had said ‘yes’ to his revolutionary design of an aircraft that most people would name if asked to name a British World War II aircraft.
They don’t make them like that anymore…and I so wish they did!
Well said. It’s interesting to note that the new Super Mario Brothers movie, which has not gone down the Woke wankery route is doing far better at the box office than the woke crap.
