The Greater London Mayor Sadiq Khan has degraded London according to a lot of people who either live there or used to live there. He and his administration has degraded London’s nightlife which is now a shadow of its former self according to those such as the writer Charlotte Gill who have taken an interest in such things. Khan’s anti transport and anti business policies such as Low Traffic Networks and ULEZ have made London much less of the dynamic trading and Small and Medium Sized Business (SME’s) hub that it was in my time living their prior to Khan.
But it is the out of control crime that is damaging London and Londoners the most. Khan’s priority as both Police and Crime Commissioner as well as Mayor, should have been to properly police London. The Metropolitan Police should have been better led and not just by Khan as Police and Crime Commissioner, but the police’s own uniformed leadership as well.
Everything seems to be policed in London these days except actual crime. Khan spent what is probably an enormous amount of money setting up a ‘hate speech and hate crime’ unit which appears, at least from what I’ve read and experienced, to have been set up in order to fight political battles instead of fighting real crime. All the while this sort of stuff is happening London’s streets and transport systems have become more and more unsafe for normal everyday law abiding Londoners. What’s worse is that people no longer intervene when there is trouble. Many people know that the police will not back them up if they did intervene or that poor policing has allowed a knife culture to develop or that other Londoners will not help them if they tackle a criminal.
In Khan’s now ruined London people don’t even intervene when a woman is raped on a Tube train. Here’s the Sky News report on this attack. As usual the quoted text is in italics whereas my comments are in plain text.
Sky News said:
A man has been jailed for raping a woman in a “brazen attack” on the London Underground in front of other passengers during a busy morning service.
Ryan Johnston, 37, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Friday to nine years in prison, with a further five on licence, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
He was charged with rape, attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault, as well as outraging public decency in relation to another complainant.
When you realise the extent of this bastards offending and the nature of it then you may like me consider that nine years is really not enough gaol time for him. In my view he should have got at least fifteen to twenty years. There are serious aggravating factors in this pattern offending and that should have resulted in an uplift in gaol time not a sentence that he will likely only serve two thirds of.
Sky News continued:
Johnston chased two women to their home after they noticed him masturbating while looking through the window outside a house near Bounds Green Underground station at around 5am on 23 February 2020, the British Transport Police (BTP) said.
He banged on their door and put his hand through the letterbox after the women managed to get inside safely before he eventually left.
He then boarded a Piccadilly Line train at Heathrow Terminal Five around three hours later, where he approached a young woman who was asleep, the BTP said.
Johnston sexually assaulted and then raped the 20-year-old – who was returning home from an evening out with friends – in front of other passengers.
There is a disturbing pattern to Johnston’s behaviour. First there was the public masturbating, then the chasing of the women and putting them in fear for their lives and finally the very public rape on a tube train. This offender is a bloody monster who is likely to be back on the streets in seven years time or less.
A French national travelling with his 11-year-old son witnessed the attack and reported it to the police.
All praise is due to this French national who took the time to report what they’d seen. However it does need to be asked why nobody else saw what was happened and made a report? Were people fearful of ‘getting involved’ and worried about getting pushback from any friends this rapey scumbag might have had or even concerned that the police would not protect them if something like this happened?
But the attack was not captured on CCTV and officers were unable to identify the victim at the time of the attack, the BTP said.
Johnston was arrested at HMP Brixton – where he was serving time for burglary – in December 2022, after a BTP review of historical rape cases led to his identification, and detectives identified the victim in the same month.
It sounds like Johnston was caught not because of immediate police action or a functioning security system on public transport but by the sheer chance of this case coming up as part of a review of historical cases. Maybe the fact that this monster was caught by relative chance is an indication that BTP have lost as much control of crime on London’s transport infrastructure as the Metropolitan Police have lost control of the streets?
Khan’s London both the aboveground and below ground bits are now cesspits of the most awful crime. The fact that a woman can be raped in an underground train full of passengers is a clear indication that the Khanage is getting worse. Khan could have been a crime fighting Mayor because that is what London needs, instead he’s presided over a situation where crime is what London is becoming most infamous for.
