I might not like the Liberal Democrats as a party, but fair play to them for chucking out of the party a councillor of theirs who expressed support online for Hamas and their carrying out of the 7/10 Pogrom.
Shortly after the anniversary of the 7/10 Pogrom occurred, Lib Dem town councillor Leena Sarah Farhat decided to praise the attack and the attackers and according to the BBC report into this case said:
“Operation Al-Aqsa Flood is one of the most important, valiant, ground-shaking anti-colonial uprisings of our time.
“At the crack of dawn they flew over & burst through the colonial wall, outsmarting and striking a lightning rod blow to the tyrant Goliath.
“Long live the resistance.”
Yep that’s pretty unequivocally clear support for Hamas from Cllr Farhat and support for their unprovoked and murderous attack on Israeli civilians.
The BBC added:
A Liberal Democrat councillor has been suspended by the party after sharing a social media message that appeared to celebrate the Hamas attack on Israel last October.
Leena Sarah Farhat, a member of Llanfairfechan town council in Conwy county, was also her party’s candidate in Ynys Môn at the general election.
She told BBC Wales she had made a mistake in reposting the message on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The party said the original message was “deeply offensive and unacceptable”.
We’ve all made mistakes on social media but mostly that is merely sharing a spicy meme or maybe following someone who at first smelled fair but later on started to smell foul. Many of us have posted stuff that we’ve swiftly deleted, but all these things are a world away from seeing a post celebrating a mass murder and then sharing it. What Cllr Fahat did was the moral equivalent of posting a picture of Stalin’s first chief enforcer Genrikh Yagoda with text that is supportive of Stalin’s purges and Gulags. That would be obviously supportive of mass murder and no different from what Cllr Farhat did.
This case makes me wonder how good is the vetting that the Lib Dems are carrying out on their candidates or potential candidates? Are they proactively checking for Islamist sympathies or supportive statements made about Islamic terror groups? If not, they should because this individual who acted to show her support for the actions of Hamas should never have been allowed to be either a councillor nor a Parliamentary candidate. As I said, I don’t like the Lib Dems and I want them to be better than they are, as in more liberal and more democratic, but they seem to have dealt with this situation pretty quickly and I praise them for this.
